ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Bill Sturm, Principal, Serena Sturm Architects
By virtue of a pioneering practice in ecological design, Bill Sturm has established a reputation for delivering beautiful buildings that perform beautifully. A cofounder of Serena Sturm Architects, Ltd., Mr. Sturm has designed and managed numerous award-winning projects during a professional career spanning 40 years. Bill has lectured extensively, juried multiple professional awards, and has been featured on the radio, TV, and in print to promote the sustainable design movement. He is currently a member of AIA National’s Energy Leadership Group after serving as the 2014 Chairman of AIA National’s Committee on the Environment Advisory Group. While leading COTE, Bill advanced the profession’s practice of project performance analysis, strengthened membership’s adoption of the AIA 2030 Commitment, and engaged students and emerging professionals by inaugurating the AIA Student Top Ten Awards. Bill has served as a member of the AIA’s Sustainability Scan Working Group, AIA’s Focus Group on Carbon Footprint Metric, and the AIA’s initial Case Study of the 2030 Commitment.

Maria Smithburg, Landscape Architect
Maria Smithburg’s experience in landscape architecture over the last thirteen years has ranged from master planning to completed projects, such as urban parks and residential gardens. While working at the Chicago Park District from 1988 to 1992, she was responsible for presenting her projects at public meetings and working with community groups. Prior to working in public service, she spent her time designing commercial and institutional landscapes for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, based in Chicago, Illinois, and for Walker-Kluesing Design Group of Boston, Massachusetts. She has been running her own practice since 1992 and is currently working on gardens in the Chicago area, as well as in Harbor County, Michigan. Ms. Smithburg’s interest in the arts and her architectural background allow her to better understand the relationship between buildings and open space within an artistic context. Her academic pursuit has involved teaching landscape design theory at the University of Illinois in Chicago from 1988 to 1992. She taught garden design courses at the Chicago Botanic Garden from 1993 to 1994, focusing on landscape elements that provide the opportunity for personal and cultural expression. Ms. Smithburg has lectured at the Chicago Botanic Garden, The Arts Club, and numerous garden clubs in the Chicago area. She received her B.Arch. from the University of Buenos Aires and her M.L.A. from Harvard University. She currently serves on The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s Stewardship Council.

Martha Twaddle, MD, FACP, FAAHPM, HMDC, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital
Dr. Martha Twaddle combines nearly thirty years of experience in the care of seriously ill people and their families in a variety of areas of service. She currently serves as the Waud Family Medical Director for Palliative Medicine & Supportive Care at Northwestern Medicine. Her academic work includes developing curriculum, guidelines, and models of care for healthcare professionals to provide care for the seriously ill in all settings. She works with others at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine exploring how technology and also prescriptive nature can improve health outcomes as well as collaborating nationally in the development of patient-family centered quality metrics. On behalf of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), Dr. Twaddle served as the Co-Chair for the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care, which completed the 4th edition of the clinical practice guidelines for the field in late October 2018.
